How Do You Remove Hard Water Stains Without Harsh Chemicals?
Hard water stains are calcium carbonate, so a mild acid dissolves them. Citric acid solution or white vinegar, held against the deposit long enough to work, converts the scale to a soluble calcium salt that rinses away. Keep acid off marble, limestone, travertine, grout, sealed granite and rubber seals.
Why does an acid remove hard water stains at all?
Because limescale is a carbonate, and carbonates dissolve in acid. This is one of the few cleaning problems where the natural option is not a compromise, it is simply the correct chemistry.
Water hardness means dissolved calcium and magnesium, conventionally reported as milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate equivalent. When hard water is heated or evaporates, it leaves the calcium behind as calcium carbonate, which is the chalky white film on your glass, your taps, your kettle element and your shower head.
Calcium carbonate is the salt of a weak acid, so a stronger acid takes the carbonate back and leaves a soluble calcium salt that rinses away. With vinegar:
CaCO3 + 2CH3COOH → Ca(CH3COO)2 (soluble) + H2O + CO2
Citric acid does the same thing and adds a second mechanism. It is a chelator: it grabs and holds the calcium ion in solution rather than just protonating the carbonate. That makes it more effective per gram than its acidity alone would suggest, and it works better on rust and iron staining. It also arrives as a dry powder, so you are not shipping water around the country, and it does not leave a kitchen smelling like a chip shop.
One distinction worth keeping straight, because the two problems look similar on a shower door. Limescale is mineral. Soap scum is different: it is the insoluble calcium and magnesium salts of soap fatty acids, formed when true soap meets hard water. Acid dissolves both, but the durable fix for soap scum is to stop making it, by switching from a true soap to a synthetic surfactant that does not precipitate.
Why is this worse in Abbotsford than in Surrey?
Because the water arrives from completely different places, and the Fraser Valley is one of the few regions where that difference is visible on a shower door.
Metro Vancouver’s supply comes from the Capilano, Seymour and Coquitlam reservoirs, which is mountain snowmelt and rainfall with very low dissolved mineral content. It is very soft water. It is soft enough, and was mildly acidic enough, that Metro Vancouver runs a corrosion control program to protect building plumbing: pH raised from 7.7 to a target of 8.3 to 8.5, and alkalinity doubled to about 20 mg/L as calcium carbonate (Metro Vancouver). Doubling the alkalinity to twenty is a useful thing to sit with. There is very little mineral in that water to begin with.
Abbotsford and Mission are a different system. Abbotsford Mission Water and Sewer Services draws from Norrish Creek, Cannell Lake, and wells in the Abbotsford-Sumas Aquifer (Abbotsford). The surface supply is very soft, like Metro Vancouver’s. The groundwater wells are not: groundwater picks up calcium and magnesium from the rock it moves through, and it runs measurably harder. None of the supply is treated for hardness.
The practical consequence, and the reason people compare notes and get confused, is that the same Abbotsford house can be on soft water for much of the year and noticeably harder water when the wells are in service. You get real limescale, real soap scum, and less lather from true soaps. A reader in Surrey or Delta on Metro Vancouver supply mostly does not, which is why generic advice about “hard water” reads as irrelevant to some Fraser Valley households and completely on the nose to others.
For reference, the standard classification is soft below 60 mg/L of calcium carbonate, moderately hard 60 to 120 mg/L, and hard above 120 mg/L (USGS). We are not going to print a specific number for any local supply here, because the published figures differ between sources and we would rather describe the direction accurately than quote a number we cannot stand behind. If you want your own figure, ask your municipality for the current annual water quality report. Langley in particular operates its own wells for part of its area, so a Langley answer depends on which part.
What is the method, fixture by fixture?
The single biggest mistake is contact time. People spray, wipe, and conclude that natural descalers do not work. An acid has to stay in contact with the deposit long enough to dissolve it. Wrapping or soaking beats spraying every time.

Three rules that make the difference:
- Dry the surface afterwards. Every one of these deposits forms when water evaporates and leaves its minerals behind. A squeegee and thirty seconds of drying prevents more scale than any product removes.
- Repeat rather than escalate. A second twenty-minute soak beats reaching for something stronger, and it will not damage the fixture.
- Never mix an acid with bleach. Acid plus bleach produces chlorine gas (Washington State DOH). Many toilet bowl cleaners are already acidic, so never pour bleach into a bowl that has had one in it. Health Canada’s line is simply: “Never mix household chemical products together.”
What surfaces will an acid ruin?
This is the part where a natural method can do more damage than a conventional one, and it needs saying plainly.
Acids are safe on glass, porcelain, glazed ceramic tile, stainless steel if you rinse and dry, chrome with brief contact, and most plastics.
Acids are not safe on:
- Marble, limestone, travertine and other calcareous stone. Permanent etching. The Natural Stone Institute states products containing vinegar “may dull or etch calcareous stones” and recommends a neutral pH 7 cleaner, with pH 7 to 8 safe for all stone (Natural Stone Institute). An etch is not a stain. It is dissolved surface, and it has to be re-polished.
- Cementitious and unsealed grout. The acid attacks the cement binder.
- Sealed granite. It degrades the sealer over time and leaves the stone more stain-prone.
- Natural stone sealers generally, including on quartzite and slate installations.
- Rubber gaskets and seals with repeated exposure, which is why you descale a washing machine through the drum rather than by wiping the door seal.
- Aluminium and cast iron.
If your shower has a marble or travertine surround, the answer is not a weaker acid. It is a neutral stone cleaner, a squeegee, and a drying cloth, permanently. On stone, prevention is the whole strategy.
When is the scale beyond cleaning?
Hard water damage stops being a cleaning problem at a point most people do not realise exists. If glass has been left scaled for years, the mineral can etch into the surface itself, and no descaler brings that back. The glass has to be polished by a restoration specialist or replaced. The same is true of a chrome finish that has pitted underneath old scale.
The honest test: after a full contact-time soak and a gentle nylon pad, does the surface come back clear when wet but go cloudy again as it dries? If yes, the cloudiness is in the glass, not on it. Stop scrubbing.
