How Do You Get Rid of Dust in a House Naturally?

The short answer

Damp-dust with microfibre, vacuum with a HEPA filter, and work top to bottom so nothing is recontaminated. A peer-reviewed hospital study found a microfibre system with plain detergent removed 95% of surface microorganisms against 68% for a cotton string mop. No spray polish and no scented product is needed.

Does microfibre actually work better, or is that marketing?

It works better, and there is a real peer-reviewed number for it, which is not the number you have seen quoted.

Rutala, Gergen and Weber published a microbiologic evaluation of microfibre mops in the American Journal of Infection Control in 2007. Three test conditions, 24 rooms each, sampled with contact plates before and after cleaning.

Two things fall out of that table. The first is that microfibre beat cotton by 27 percentage points using nothing but a detergent. The second, and the more interesting one, is that adding a disinfectant to the microfibre system changed nothing: 95% versus 95%. The authors’ conclusion was that “the use of a disinfectant did not improve the microbial elimination demonstrated by the microfiber system.”

That is the single strongest piece of evidence we know of that on ordinary floors, good mechanical cleaning can make routine chemical disinfection redundant. It is also why our fragrance-free cleaning method is built around cloth quality and technique rather than around what is in the bottle.

What is the microfibre claim you should ignore?

The one that says “microfibre removes 98 to 99% of bacteria and 93% of viruses using only water, while cotton removes 30%, according to an EPA study.” It is repeated on hundreds of cleaning company websites, and it is a distortion.

The document being cited is Environmental Best Practices for Health Care Facilities: Using Microfiber Mops in Hospitals, published by US EPA Region 9 in November 2002. It is a cost, ergonomics and chemical-reduction case study. It describes microfibre as denser than cotton, able to hold six times its weight in water, and positively charged so it attracts negatively charged dust, and it reports labour and chemical savings. It contains no bacterial or viral removal percentages at all (archived EPA document).

The real study is Rutala 2007, above, and Rutala used a detergent cleaner, not plain water. So the honest claim is 95% versus 68% with a detergent, which is a large, well-documented difference, rather than a bigger number nobody can source.

There is counter-evidence too, and it belongs in the same paragraph. A 2019 study in the Journal of Hospital Infection found that detergent, disinfectant or sporicidal products used with microfibre performed significantly better than microfibre with water alone, and concluded that microfibre with water alone “is less effective and should not replace the use of biocidal products” in clinical settings (JHI, 2019). A separate controlled study of ten different microfibre cloths found efficacy varied substantially between them. Microfibre is not one uniform product.

The honest position, then, has three parts. Microfibre plus a detergent is an excellent domestic cleaning system and beats cotton by a wide margin. In clinical or outbreak settings it does not replace a disinfectant. And cloth quality matters, so cheap cloths are not the same purchase.

Why does dry dusting make dust worse?

Because a dry cloth, a feather duster and a lambswool wand mostly move fine particles from a surface into the air, where they stay suspended and then settle again, often on the surface you have just finished.

Health Canada’s guidance for cleaning after a wildfire smoke event says it directly: do not dry-dust, damp-wipe hard surfaces with a microfibre cloth, and wet-mop floors (Health Canada). The reasoning is about smoke particles, but the mechanism is identical for house dust.

Damp works because of how microfibre is built. The fibres are polyester and polyamide roughly one sixteenth the thickness of a human hair, with about 40 times more surface area than cotton fibre, dense enough to hold six times their weight in water. They carry a positive charge that attracts negatively charged dust, and split fibres form microscopic hooks that trap particles and penetrate the surface pores of most flooring. Add a little water and the particles are captured in the cloth until you rinse it out, instead of being flicked into the room.

You also do not need a spray polish. Aerosol furniture and glass sprays put product straight into your breathing zone, and Health Canada advises minimising scented products including plug-in and aerosol deodorisers, because “these products can hide odours by producing VOCs” that “can cause breathing problems, headaches, and irritation to the eyes, nose and throat” (Healthy Home Guide). A damp cloth leaves less residue for dust to stick to than a polish does.

What order should you clean in?

Dust falls. Every efficient dusting routine is built around that one fact, and most household routines fight it.

  1. Ventilate first, on a clear-air day. Get outdoor air moving through before you start, not after. Ventilating after cleaning re-deposits outdoor particles on surfaces you just did.
  2. Top down, room by room. Light fittings and the tops of door frames, then shelves and picture frames, then furniture surfaces, then skirting boards, then the floor. Anything you dislodge lands on something you have not done yet.
  3. Damp microfibre on hard surfaces. Fold the cloth into quarters so you have eight clean faces, and turn to a fresh face when the one you are using stops picking up.
  4. A fresh cloth or pad per room. This is the specific step that stops cross-contamination in the hospital protocol, and it is the one people skip at home by returning a dirty pad to the bucket.
  5. Soft furnishings before the floor. Vacuum upholstery, curtains and mattresses, then do the floor last so what falls out gets collected.
  6. HEPA-filtered vacuum, last. Health Canada requires a HEPA or externally exhausted vacuum for mould cleanup, and the same instruction applies during smoke season, since an ordinary vacuum re-suspends the fine particles it collects. One piece of equipment covers both of the Fraser Valley’s biggest indoor air problems, which is a rare bit of luck.
  7. Wash and dry the cloths properly. No fabric softener, ever. It coats microfibre and destroys both the capillary action and the electrostatic effect. Do not wash with cotton items, which shed lint that clogs the fibres, and avoid high-heat drying, which melts and mats them.

If you run a portable air cleaner, size it to deliver filtered airflow of at least two to three times the room volume per hour. A small unit in a large living room is mostly decorative.

What is the honest downside of microfibre?

It sheds plastic. We are not going to pretend otherwise on a page arguing for it.

Microfibre cloths are synthetic, and synthetic textiles release fibres in the wash. Published laundry research on apparel textiles, the closest available proxy, measured shedding from 9.6 mg to 1,240 mg per kg of textile per wash, an estimated 8,809 to more than 6,877,000 individual fibres, with shedding increasing at higher wash temperatures and greater with detergent than with water alone (PLOS ONE, 2021).

The honest counterweight is that natural fibres shed heavily too. Cotton and wool textiles in the same body of work released 165 ± 44 mg/kg per wash, comparable to mechanically treated polyester at 161 ± 173 mg/kg. The difference between a cotton cloth and a microfibre cloth is biodegradability, not shedding rate.

What that adds up to in practice: wash microfibre cold, in full loads, less often, with a filter bag or an in-machine filter, and air dry. Buy fewer and better cloths and keep them for years. Do not let anyone tell you microfibre is a zero-impact choice, including us.

Dust is the part of a house that comes back fastest, which is why it responds better to a regular short visit than to an occasional heroic one. Does microfibre really remove 99% of bacteria with water alone?

No, and the study everyone cites for that does not exist in the form it is quoted. The EPA Region 9 microfibre document is a cost and ergonomics case study with no such figures. The real peer-reviewed result is 95% microbial removal by microfibre with a detergent cleaner, not with water alone.

Why is dry dusting worse than damp dusting?

Because a dry cloth or a feather duster lifts fine particles back into the air rather than capturing them. They settle again within hours, usually on the surface you just did. A damp microfibre cloth holds the particles until you rinse them out in the sink.

Do I need a HEPA vacuum?
